The Nuisance Abatement Bylaw No. 2005-20 has been amended to form Nuisance Abatement Bylaw No. 2022-06 as per Council Meeting on March 15th, 2022.
This bylaw has been reviewed and amended to adhere to the core values in Shaunavon’s Strategic plan which includes a focus to maintain “Small-town character”, and to increase beautification through development incentives and programs. The Town’s goal is “to provide a safe and prosperous place to live, work, play and invest by creating an attractive and diverse environment for community members which meets their physical and cultural needs and accommodates a variety of lifestyles”.
The following small changes to the previous rendition of the Bylaw have been made:
Under section 3(e) - 2005-20: Nuisance Abatement Bylaw, the term “Junked vehicle" has been re-defined to read as the following in the 2022-06 - Nuisance Abatement Bylaw:
“e) “Derelict vehicle” means any automobile, tractor, truck, trailer, recreational vehicle, camper, boat or other vehicle that:
i) either:
1. has no valid license plates attached to it; or
2. is in a rusted, wrecked, partly wrecked, dismantled, partly dismantled, inoperative or abandoned condition; and
ii) is located on private land, but that:
1. is not within a structure erected in accordance with any Bylaw respecting the erection of buildings and structures in force within the Municipality; and
2. does not form a part of a business enterprises lawfully being operated on that land;”
The announcement of this Bylaw amendment provides ample time for property owners to remove (whether that mean recycle or dispose of) derelict vehicles found on their property prior to June 30th, 2022. If derelict vehicles have not been dealt with by June 30th, an Order to Remedy may be issued by the Regional Bylaw Officer. Such action has a deadline to remove the derelict vehicles within two (2) weeks of the Order to Remedy.
Derelict vehicles may have useful materials that could be recycled. Recycling metals has many benefits that include:
1. Good for the environment
2. Conserve energy
3. Create more jobs
4. Can earn you money
5. Frees up space
If you have a vehicle on your property that may be considered derelict under the Nuisance Abatement Bylaw, you have the opportunity to contact a metal recycling company to assist you with dealing with the derelict vehicle (with the possibility of even making some money!).
We also kindly remind residents that the Nuisance Abatement Bylaw covers Yard Maintenance, Outdoor Storage and other responsibilities that become imperative in the coming months as the weather warms up.
