The Town of Shaunavon is excited to announce that we have received $1,100 from Affinity Credit Union’s District Council Funding to assist with costs associated with the purchase and installation of a camera security system in Memorial Park.
The Town is proud to offer high quality facilities and amenities to residents and visitors alike. Maintaining and keeping these facilities functional and appealing requires consistent upkeep and costs for manpower and equipment.
Memorial Park is a beautiful and well-used park in the community, it hosts a Cenotaph: War Memorial, Randy Surjik Memorial Amphitheatre, picnic tables, playground, Shawnee Campground and lush green space with a host of mature trees. In 2022 the Town of Shaunavon completed a total rebuild of the campground/public washroom facilities with a grand opening hosted May 19, 2022. Since then, we have seen an increase in vandalism and poor treatment of Memorial Park facilities, which threatens the condition and viability of these amenities in the long run.
Through discussion on how to reduce vandalism and the associated costs incurred due to these acts, Council and Wellness & Leisure approved the investigation into the installation of a camera system in Memorial Park to protect the publicly-owned recreation facility that provides washrooms and showers to users of Memorial Park.
We are grateful to receive this grant funding to put towards this camera installation project. The goal is to reduce vandalism in the hopes of increasing the quality of experience to all users and increase safety through visible crime deterrents. The camera system will be mounted to the washroom facility and cover the adjacent areas of Memorial Park and will host a digital video recorder allowing potential cost recovery or prosecution. Signs will be posted informing people of the camera system.
We thank all those who respect our facilities as we are proud of the great amenities we have in Shaunavon and want to keep them in good condition for all to use!
