We are thrilled to announce that the Town of Shaunavon has successfully been awarded up to $22,603.00 from SGI’s Provincial Traffic Safety Fund Grant to assist with the cost of purchasing additional flashing crosswalk signs to install in Shaunavon school zones!
Currently, each of Shaunavon’s school zones is equipped with one set of solar light up crosswalk signs. It has been apparent that these flashing signs have increased driver awareness regarding pedestrian activity in the school zone. To increase safety further, the Town of Shaunavon will install a full set of solar flashing crosswalk signs out front of the Shaunavon Public School (current signage exists near the bus route at 3rd Street W), as well as install a third flashing sign to communicate with the existing signs in front of Christ the King School and at the Shaunavon High School, to have signs flashing for each direction at the 3-way crosswalks.
The Town of Shaunavon team plans to install these flashing pedestrian signs in the near future. CAA School Zone Safety Assessments have been conducted at each of Shaunavon’s schools in 2022, 2023 and 2024 to identify key safety problems that occur. Results demonstrated various risky behaviours performed by motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike. Infractions observed in high volume included speeding, jaywalking and failing to look both ways before crossing the street. The Town has installed speed radar signs and light up crosswalk signs in each school zone to reduce speeding, and make it easier for drivers to see pedestrians crossing the street. More signs will continue to increase the usage of the crosswalks by pedestrians, to reduce the chance of traffic injuries and increase safety overall, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times when visibility is reduced given the busy flow of traffic.
We are grateful to have SGI’s support through funding to assist in promoting and ensuring school zone safety throughout our community!
/ SPEED REMINDERS / A reminder to all drivers that the speed limit near parks, schools and playgrounds is 25km/hr, 24 hours a day. Drivers may not exceed the 40km/hour speed limit throughout Shaunavon. Thank you for keeping everyone safe!
